How Scanquil Works

A quick tour of the core ideas -- groups, scanning, backup, the optional AI tools, and cross-device sync. Every individual conversion tool also has its own how-it-works notes on its own page.

The Basics

Scanquil is a free document scanner and converter that runs entirely in your browser -- no install, no account. Take a photo or import a file, and its free on-device engine extracts the text immediately. Everything is organized into groups, searchable, and stays on your device unless you choose otherwise.

Groups

A group is a folder for related pages -- a set of receipts, a warranty card and its manual, one long document split across several photos. Create one from the home page ("New Group") or straight from a scan. Inside a group you can reorder pages, edit extracted text, remove pages (with a few seconds to undo), and rename or delete the group itself.

Scanning and Search

Take a photo or import an existing image or PDF, and Scanquil's free on-device OCR reads the text immediately -- no upload, works offline. Search across every group at once from the home page, or search inside just one group from its own page; matches are highlighted in context.

Backup and Restore

Since nothing is stored anywhere but your device by default, back up anything you'd be upset to lose. Export creates a single .zip with everything -- every group, page, and image. Import brings that .zip back in, adding to whatever's already there rather than replacing it, so it's safe to import on a fresh device or as a merge.

AI-Powered Tools

Tools marked "AI" use a cloud document-processing service instead of the free on-device engine, for scans the free pass struggles with -- skewed photos, dense tables, messy receipts. Each use is paid, per use, via UPI -- the price (₹2-₹6 depending on the tool, or per-page for multi-page PDFs) is shown right on the button before you tap it, so you always know the cost upfront. There’s no subscription or stored balance; if the AI request fails after you’ve paid, you’re automatically refunded. Results can be saved into a group afterward just like a normal scan, so they stay searchable and editable.

Ask AI

From inside a group with at least one page, Ask AI answers questions grounded in that group's already-extracted text -- "what was the total on the March invoice," "when does the warranty expire." Answers are saved to the group so you don't lose them when you close the panel.

Cross-Device Sync

Sync carries specific groups between your own devices without an account. Tap the sync icon (top-left corner) to turn it on and get a private code -- a QR code and a typeable version. Enter that code on another device (or scan the QR) to pair it.

Sync stays off for every group until you explicitly turn it on for that one, from either device -- turning on the feature itself doesn't share anything by itself. Look for the sync icon on each group's tile. There's no password recovery for the code, so save it somewhere safe before you need it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to create an account?

No -- nothing in Scanquil requires signing up, ever.

What happens if I switch devices without syncing first?

Anything not synced or exported stays on the original device. Export a backup, or turn sync on for the groups you want to carry over, before switching.

Is Sync required to use the app?

No, it’s entirely optional and off by default -- the app works fully offline and locally without it.
